KISIPs Settlements Level Community Development Plans (CDPs) sessions now mirrors hope, dignity and socio-economic inclusion for residents

A team from the Second Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP2) is undertaking a key validation exercise for community led settlement level plans (CDPs) interventions covering thematic areas such as solid waste management, crime and violence and disaster management in the informal settlements.

The sessions, which commenced last week, has since been carried out in Kisumu, Kakamega and Nairobi counties. The team is also expected to undertake the exercise in Nakuru County. The project in close collaboration with the county teams has been carrying out identification and selection of priorities through participatory approaches involving beneficiary communities in the 25 selected informal selected covering Kilifi, Kisumu, Kakamega, Nairobi and Nakuru counties.

During the Kisumu and Kakamega sessions, the team – majorly from Component 2 – and part of the National Project Coordination Team (NPCT) formation, held meetings with the community and the relevant technical departments, majorly drawn from the County Project Coordination Team (CPCT), between November 20 - 26, 2023.

The meeting discussed thematic areas such as solid waste management, crime and violence and disaster management. In Kisumu, the NPCT and the CPCT later visited Manyatta A, Manyatta B, Bandani, Nyawita/Migosi, Kibuye and Muhoroni informal settlements while in Kakamega, the delegation visited Amalemba, Kambi Somali, Lukoye, Shibale and Mjini informal settlements.

Kisumu county validation workshop was graced by the CECM Lands, Housing and Urban Development, the CPCT Coordinator among other technical officers while in Kakamega the session was graced by Chief Officer, Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, the CPCT Coordinator among other technical officers.

The key reason for the validation sessions with the stakeholders at the county level was to review the output to ensure it reflects the aspiration of the people and the county governments.

This will lead to smooth and seamless implementation of prioritized projects in the next phase.

The Project through Socio-Economic Inclusion Planning Component, supports development of Community - Led Settlement Level Plans (CDPs) aimed at addressing community needs for access to basic services and socio-economic inclusion.

The CDPs process identifies and documents community priorities, some of which are viable for implementation under the Project while others are recommended to other relevant actors.
KISIP 2 will spearhead other interventions within the CDPs process including small-scale social infrastructure works such as centres for the community, youth, day care, small scale infrastructure responding to disaster risks and impacts such as creating and reinforcing drainages and riverbanks, drainage of stagnant water and remedies against natural hazards and other shocks and stressors.

Others include small scale community-based solid waste management initiatives such as waste collection and recycling centers, small scale economic infrastructure such as bodaboda and market shades.
